Astellas is announcing a Sr. Scientist, Cellular Immunology opportunity at their Xyphos site in South San Francisco, CA.


The primary purpose of the Sr. Scientist is to lead an essential cellular immunology core function to support cellular engineering, immune phenotyping, and early-stage process development activities for Xyphos’ convertibleCAR cellular therapy platform. Immuno-oncology research programs that the individual will support will range from early discovery efforts through development. This position will work primarily in a laboratory setting with R&D teams.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Defines all cellular engineering functions including the generation of chimeric antigen receptor-bearing cells as needed to support internal R&D efforts, preclinical animal models, and collaborations.
  • Oversees the engineering of target cell lines to support immuno-oncology efforts.
  • Leads and executes early-stage process development studies to support immune cell manufacturing, establish protocols for cell therapy quality analysis, and perform characterization experiments to strive for improved cellular therapy products.
  • Develops and establishes immune-based assays (functional and phenotypic) and drive their deployment and implementation in support of oncology research programs.
  • Participates in cross-functional collaborations to meet material supply deliverables and project timelines for R&D efforts.
  • Supports and contributes to the implementation of Xyphos’ platform for different targets and modalities.
  • Supports flow-cytometry based characterization of samples from preclinical animal models.
  • Manages flow cytometry equipment operations and functions, training individuals as needed in equipment use and data analysis.
  • Demonstrates outstanding communications skills with a solid ability to articulate experimental plans, present research findings in meetings, works effectively in a cross-functional team, and collaborates with other members of Astellas R&D teams.
  • Strong team-oriented mentality exemplified by willingness to take on tasks and responsibilities as needed to facilitate advancement of a wide variety of programs.



  • PhD in immunology, immuno-oncology, or closely related field with 5+ years of industry and/or post-doctoral experience
  • Solid, direct experience designing and implementing multi-parameter flow cytometry (8+ channels) and immune cell functional assays with readouts for cytotoxicity, proliferation, cytokine secretion, activation.
  • Experience engineering primary immune cells, particularly through viral delivery approaches (e.g. lentivirus).
  • Experience working with antibody-based therapies.
  • Demonstrated excellence in critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supervising direct reports and with managing projects and teams.
  • Ability to work independently in the lab, attention to detail in experimentation and timely record keeping.
  • Strong work ethic with a passion for working in a fast-paced, dynamic and diverse work environment.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US.


  • Industry experience (work, post-doc, internship), especially in adoptive cell therapy field
  • Familiarity with target identification and antibody-drug assessment and validation process.
  • Demonstrated process development capabilities.
